Bridge Resource Management Definition

The use and coordination of all the skills, knowledge, experiences and resources available to the bridge team to accomplish or achieve the established goals of safety and efficiency of the passage.

Training Objectives

To motivate the bridge team - if necessary - to change its behaviour to good resource management practices during everyday operations. This includes understanding of the importance of good management and team work and the willingness to change behavior. The use of common terminology is also emphasized.

Target Group

Merchant and naval deck officers and engineers, maritime pilots and shore-based personnel.

Development

This Bridge Resource Management course evolved from OAA’s Crew Resource Management programme developed in close cooperation with major maritime organizations. The group consists of Maritime Pilots’ Institute Netherlands, Finnish Maritime Administration, Swedish Maritime Administration, Norwegian Shipowners’ Association and Silja Line.

Course Material

Student’s Workbook, handouts, BRM checklist cards, Refresher Video Tape and Workbook, case studies (paper & video) and an application case.

Training Methods

  • Computer Based Training (CBT) - for transfer of facts about human behavior.
  • Workshops - for the change process by i.e. analysis of real accidents and incidents in BRM terms.
  • Application case - for reinforcement in a ship simulator or a bridge mock-up.

Course Duration

Normally 4 days, evenings included.
